thigh gap

The thigh gap is a craze that is causing numerous women to starve themselves. The thigh gap is a trend that is super-hot on social media and means that when you stand with your legs together that your thighs do not touch.

How the Thigh Gap Affects Teen Girls

Ever since the beginning of time, women have been given an unrealistic image as to what the definition of beauty is. A little more than a decade ago teens were obsessed with becoming skinny since that was what the media told them they needed to be (remember the thinspo/fitspo movevent??). Because of this obsession, many teenage girls developed anorexia. Now with this thigh gap craze being heavily promoted on social media, teenage girls are trying to alter their already changing bodies once again. They feel as though they have to listen to what the media and their peers say that they should look like or they are not going to be beautiful.

The good news is not all teen girls are on board with the thigh gap trend. However, the ones who are do some unhealthy things.

The Truth

When it comes to the thigh gap, it all relies on bone structure. Some teens are going to have the structure for it and others are not. Therefore, if a young girl’s body is not made to look like that then it never will.

What Does the Experts Say About It

Doctors have revealed that ethnicity, pelvic size, width, and genetics are going to play a role in whether a woman has a thigh gap. Therefore, the majority of the girls are not going to have it and if they do, it is only going to be the size of about a peephole. The only way to achieve this desired gap would be to lose a drastic amount of weight, which would be dangerous for girls going through puberty.

Bottom Line

Overall, we need to teach these teen girls that what the media says about body image should be disregarded. It is better to be healthy than to have a thigh gap and risk deadly consequences.
