Pimsleur Approach

Did you know that polyglotism refers to the ability to master multiple languages? It’s not as hard as it sounds, either. Amaze yourself by  starting your own second language in just ten days !

Paul Pimsleur, professor and scholar of applied linguistics, developed a ground-breaking method of learning different languages through an audio-based process. Known as the Pimsleur Approach or Pimsleur Method, this process took 40 years to perfect. He researched the psychology of learning languages, and applied his extensive understanding of how our brain works with retention. This is not your typical listen-and-repeat language program! In fact, it’s much easier! Pimsleur’s in-depth ten-day program only requires 30 minutes every day to master the basics of any language.

How does it work?

Pimsleur’s research revealed the secrets behind the brain’s process of information storage and used them to the benefit of learning. He also applied his insight into how children are able to speak their basic language without formally learning it – also known as “organic learning” – and that people generally only utilize a fraction of their language’s vocabulary in order to dive right into practical teaching. He directed his courses toward focusing on proficiency in speaking and reading. These two aspects are enhanced throughout the 30-minute courses, incorporating the words that are most likely to be used in day-to-day conversation. Moreover, it’s believed that at least 80% of students learning through this process achieve enhanced comprehension during every lesson.

How do you do it?

It’s as easy as ABC! All you have to do is relax and let the program guide you.  Instructions are given by speakers of the targeted language, including translations in your native tongue. It uses spaced repetition that lets you listen to foreign words and phrases and then repeat them back at intervals. These intervals increase between repetitions until your familiarity and comprehension are measured in the coming days. However, factors such as motivation, verbal intelligence, and auditory abilities can influence your rate of comprehension. You’ll feel a bit of pressure in recognizing the repeated words, which creates an interactive aspect to the learning. Take the program with you and listen to it everywhere – you’ll pick up the language in no time!

Why do it?

Humans, by nature, are always hungry for knowledge, and learning a foreign language makes it more interesting. Statistics shows that most people worldwide are bilingual. A proposed survey would certainly reveal a number of people who would have tinkered with the idea of learning a new language, but are hesitant to even begin. This is usually due to false impressions and a fear that language programs will not produce the desired outcome.

When pursuing this interest, it’s essential to commit plenty of time to it. If done correctly, a person can master their sought-after language in as little as three months. It’s very easy to pick up a language once you’ve mastered the mechanics of basic sentence structure and the patterns for a workable vocabulary through word familiarization, and this program gives you the tools to do just that.

Pimsleur FrenchWhat do you think?

Learning a thousand words in a foreign language can go a long, long way. The Pimsleur Approach has been one of the most trusted language programs for almost 50 years, and for good reason. This method is well-suited for any lifestyle, as spending only a few minutes a day leads to language fluency.

It takes a lot of patience to be multilingual, and moreover, it takes a lot more to be a polyglot. So give it some thought, you may never know when you’ll need it. Remember what Ludwig Wittgenstein said:

“Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen.”

In English: “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.” Interesting, right?

Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed The Pimsleur Method based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called “Graduated Interval Recall.” This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the Pimsleur Programs.
