What is Mental Performance?

Mental Performance

Mental peak performance is something that most of us wish to have.  We may call it slightly different things – being on top of your game, winning, going all out – but it all boils down to the exact same thing: we want to be the very best that we can be.  Many of us say this is what we want, but few of us put in the effort it takes to achieve these goals.  After all, it’s hard work rising to the top.

The effort that is required to be at your best is more than just physical.   If that were the case, many people would be able to achieve the same goals as the people they idolize.   The mental component is the part that is commonly overlooked and underestimated .  But it is just as important, if not more so, than the physical contribution.

Mental peak performance isn’t an inherited attribute, though the proclivity for whatever you excel at is, quite possibly, handed down through family genes.  Possessing an ability is different than exhibiting the wherewithal to hone your craft and subsequently excel.  No one is born with drive.  That has to be earned.

To achieve mental peak performance in all areas of life, albeit in sports, school, or work, there are some things you have to do to set yourself up for success:

Sleep for Success _1

Sleep for Success
That sounds like an oxymoron, but it rings true in so many cases.  When you don’t get adequate sleep, you don’t perform well, you feel sleepy, and you can’t focus on your goals.  Even though you want to use those hours close to midnight to finish a paper or learn a new skill, hit the sack and rest. Your body will thank you for it in the morning. Sleep well in a comfy sleepwear from BedHead Pajamas.

Eat Right

Skipping meals is an easy way to drain your energy.  You have to keep your body fueled to keep it running.  Try eating smaller meals more often.  Five to six smaller meals are usually what is suggested to keep the body energized.  And don’t make your meals laden with junk food.  Leafy greens, lean meats, beans –adhering to the food chart will keep you on the right schedule.

Listen musicListen to Music

Classical music preferably, but any music will do for this part.  It will stimulate your brain in ways that television and pure silence cannot.  Let your mind exercise while you relax.

Keeping your body moving keeps your mind sharp.  If you are an athlete, this is something you are already incorporating in your daily regimen, but mental athletes can generously benefit from cardiovascular movement and strength training as well.  Be careful about over training-it will derail your progress and bring on sign of fatigue. The athletes who participated in “The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics” were not all born to slide, ski, and skate to success. They had to work hard to hone their skills and be at their peak performance, just like everyone else.
